Welcome to the Art and

Technology Department

IB

Grades 11 and 12 have the opportunity to study Art at both Higher and Standard level. At the end of the two year course the students prepare an exhibition for the I.B. examiner where they must present at least twenty pieces of work. This could be paints or 3-D figures, like sculpture, ceramics, etc. This portfolio represents 70% of the work and the remaining 30% is devoted to the Research Workbook. As with the practical work this research work is built up during the 2 years course. This book will contain sketches, personal investigations, feelings, etc. Please click here to view the work of the class of 2006.

Art

We offer art in 6th, 7th and 8th grade as a compulsory subject.

We start with graduated and colored pencils in Grade 6 and also introduce students to different concepts such as line, patterns, shade, shadow, tone, form and space. They have to identify the visual elements.

In Grade 7 we continue to develop the concepts above and we introduce new techniques such as Chinese ink and they have to learn to shade with radiography or graduated pens, and they also start using water color.

In the 8th Grade we apply the techniques learned and introduce dry pastels and the use of gouache. We make some 3-D designs with recycling objects and with salt paste. At the end of the year we paint some clothes using tie-dye techniques.

IGCSE

In Grades 9 and 10 the IGCSE course is offered as one of the many options. The students are able to choose to enter for the following combinations: Observational Study and Design Study or Observational Study and Interpretative Study. Each paper is assessed externally and each exam has a practical examination of 10 hour maximum with 3 pages of supporting work.

Technology

We offer technology to Grades 6 to 8 as a compulsory subject. This subject is a combination of technical drawing and craft. In the 6th grade we introduce how to use the equipment, such as the drawing board, the set-square, the compasses and the protractor. We then teach the design process and then they have to plan, prepare and create a particular project. This takes place throughout the three years, but clearly the level of difficulty changes as the students mature. In the 7th Grade we introduce them to simple isometrics, how to put measurements on a drawing and they have to learn how to draw in 3D with drawing equipment, not only free hand. In the 8th Grade they see isometrics with ellipses, with slant walls and they also see scale drawings, and plans of small apartments. At the end of the course they build a model of a house from given plans.
