The last week of the year is here!

It seems like such a long time that we have been in Prepa and now we are moving up to 1st Grade.

lastweek 024.jpgWe have had a great year and learned a lot!

This week it was time to clear the classroom, tidy up and take all our work home. We also had time to have a music competition, a party for our good behaviour and of course an end-of-year party. We’d like to say “Cheers!” to our teachers.

Famous People - Helen Keller

During this past week we have been learning about Helen Keller. She was a normal little girl until she got very sick and became blind and deaf. After many years, she learned how to read by “feeling” the letters and touching a specific object. Later on, she became a teacher and helped blind children to learn how to read and write. The children did some activities blindfolded to experience what it would be like to be blind.

This week for the topic of Famous People, we have been learning about Kylie Minogue. She is a famous singer, so the children have been learning the words to her songs and making their own songs. They then went into a “recording studio” in each classroom to record lots of different songs. You will find a Voicethread containing the recordings for each class below.

Pirates! Pirates! Pirates!

Prepa has had a fantastic week learning, making and dressing up like Pirates.  We began the week learning about the famous Pirate Henry Morgan who lived nearly 373 years ago. We discovered the places he traveled to and how life was for a pirate then.  We also wrote our own Pirate Poems and made Pirate Puppets.  Finally, on Friday we got to be a Pirate.  We paraded around Lower Primary showing off our cool homemade Pirate costumes.  It has been a long and exciting week and we all look forward to what new famous person we will be learning about next!

Reading in Prepa

This week's entry comes from Prepa Tenorio.IMG_4343.JPG

This week the children in Prepa have been reading non-fiction books about a variety of topics. They have learned the similarities and differences between fiction and non-fiction. Some of the boys have really enjoyed reading non-fiction, especially about animals and sports. Since we created the non-fiction section in our reading corners boys have become frequent visitors.

Buying non-fiction books and magazines is a great idea to stimulate the love for books in or kids.

Here are some tips for reading non-fiction with your child:
1.
Reading non-fiction takes time.  You may have to reread to make sure you understand.
2. Reading fiction is like watching a movie. Non-fiction is more like a newscast or watching a slide show.
3. Non-fiction reading is reading to learn something.
Enjoy some of the pictures of Prepa Tenorio reading non-fiction books here!
